Your employees’ personal lives invariably take precedence over work—or at least they should (more on that in a subsequent blog post). It begs the question: wouldn't your team be more inclined to deliver exceptional results for someone who genuinely cares about their lives beyond the office walls? They want to see and feel that you care about who they are outside of work.
Are they married, do they have kids, do they have pets, what are their family members names?
What hobbies do they enjoy? What lights them up on the inside, what brings them motivation?
Where are they going for vacation this year? What they did over the weekend?
The point is to engage with them about them. In fact, when was the last time you had a discussion with them that didn’t involve work AT ALL?
If you find yourself unable to answer these personal questions about your team, it might be an indicator that your priorities need recalibration. The full potential of your team is often unlocked when they perceive genuine care from their leaders. Studies show that employees who feel cared for have longer tenures, contributing significantly to the organization's bottom line.
Extend your care beyond the workplace by involving their spouses in events held outside of work hours. For remote teams, regular visits to their markets, even quarterly, can bridge the physical gap and foster a stronger sense of connection.
