#3) Invite Them into your Personal Space.

I can remember the first time the VP of our Sales Organization took a bold step by inviting our entire team, along with their significant others, to his tennis club for a Friday night after work. This wasn’t your typical office gathering; it was a chance for us to see our VP in a different light – dressed in athletic leisure, sharing snacks, and introducing us to his spouse. He let us into his world, and we had a chance to see him for who he was outside of his corner office. As we mingled, a remarkable thing happened – our significant others began forming connections. Our VP took the time to personally thank each partner for the time and energy they allowed their loved ones to invest in our department. I’m going to repeat myself to make sure you caught it…he thanked the significant others. This wasn’t a one-time event; he extended invitations for activities like 5K runs with his family.

Unbeknownst to me at the time, he was creating a culture where we worked and played hard. We WANTED to overachieve to deliver results, we WANTED to win as a team, we WANTED to work at our peak performance. We respected what he was building and how he was building it and ensured it was passed down to others. It created a movement in the organization where his team just operated differently, and as a result, produced extraordinary achievements. It wasn’t about being a VP or a member of a tennis club; the magic resided in recognizing employees as real people with lives beyond the office. Expressing gratitude for the daily trade-offs our team made for the company and acknowledging their partners became a game-changer. Suddenly, late nights and occasional travel were met with understanding at home because our significant others felt acknowledged and appreciated.

Consider what you’re passionate about outside of work. Imagine inviting your team into that space, authentically sharing a part of yourself. After all, they want to know YOU.
