It’s the end of the day, the kids are asleep, and you put on a highly anticipated TV show. Only the volume is incredibly low, and the remote control is nowhere to be found. You’ve looked in the seat cushions, on the floor, under the couch, it’s literally gone. This goes on for a few minutes. Your frustration is building as you cannot make out what is being said and now you’ve missed the opening which gave necessary background needed.
How focused are you on the TV show? How much energy is being taken by finding a way to fix your ability to hear what’s being said?
This is what happens every time someone in the workplace speaks or acts in a way that is incongruent with the way the recipient of the information needs. They cannot show up as their best self, their focus is misaligned with the task at hand. Their performance will be limited.
Instead, let’s change how you show up as a leader. Communicate and lead in a way that meets the needs of your team members. Allow the volume to be fully amplified.
Lead in their love language, not your own. Don’t be a one-size-fits-all people manager.
Our goal over the past 5 weeks was to introduce you to Gary Chapman’s love languages in a way that maybe you haven’t considered before- through a professional relationship lens. We wanted to encourage you to think differently, to inspire you to get you out of your head and into the minds of those you work with, those you lead. We hope you’ve tried some of the applications we suggested. Get feedback, what’s resonated, what hasn’t?
